‘Afficionados’ start als reggae met een draailier. Op zich al vreemd. Maar gaandeweg het nummer vordert worden we meer en meer verbaasd. Het ontaardt namelijk in een psychedelisch rocknummer met scheurende overstuurde elektrische gitaren. Tenminste, dat zou je toch denken. Maar er spelen helemaal geen gitaren bij COSMIC DRONE ! Wat we horen is een elektro-akoestische draailier (die gebouwd werd door D. Siorat)! Die wordt bespeeld door de in Orleans wereldberoemde Stephane Durand. Hij wordt op deze plaat begeleid door een zeeeer funky bassist, een drummer en een toetsenist.

Ons eigen Filiep ‘Iep’ Fourier deed ook al uitgebreide experimenten met een draailier, maar wat we hier te horen krijgen is toch wel compleet nieuw voor mij. En niet alleen voor mij. Als je er even de mening van de ‘gespecialiseerde folkpers in Europa’ op naleest, dan vind je overal verbazing en vooral ook enthousiasme terug. De groep stond verleden jaar ook op het gerenommeerde SAINT-CHARTIER festival en kreeg er ook lovende kritieken.

Met allerhande elektronische effecten kunnen namelijk de meest gekke geluiden uit Stephanes draailier getoverd worden. We hadden het al over de ‘overstuurde gitaarsound’, maar ook een geluid dat in de buurt van een kerkorgel komt, behoort tot de mogelijkheden. Of had u liever het ‘gescratch’ van een hiphop-dj? U vraag, wij euh... draaien.

Eenmaal voorbij de verbazing over dit wonderbaarlijke instrument kunnen we echt beginnen luisteren naar de muziek. Er worden heel wat elementen uit verschillende muziekstijlen gebruikt. Een vette funky bas, palmas (handgeklap dat we vooral kennen van bij flamenco), een hammondorgel dat weggelopen lijkt van de DOORS, technogrooves, reggaeritmes, jazzy stemmen, reggae, psychedelische soundeffecten… Vooral in het begin van het album resulteert dit overwegend in krachtige folkrock. Al is folkrock een veel te beperkte term om deze boeiende muziek te beschrijven.

Maar er is ook plaats voor rustige muziek die veel weg heeft van wat b.v. onze BAL DES BOITEUX doen. Titeltrack ‘Cosmic Drone’ is zo’n pareltje.

De groep is duidelijk fan van vette funk. Maar ook van seventies pop: ‘Les Frégates’ doet me denken aan SUPERTRAMP.

‘La Belle Etoile’ is een buitenbeentje. Voor één keer geen groovy ritmesectie maar wel een zeer rustig new-age-achtig nummer. Hier (en enkel hier) vind ik dat de muziek beter zou geklonken hebben met een gewone draailier. Het geluid komt te ‘synthetisch’ over. In het aansluitende St Denis en Valse valt dit gelukkig al veel minder op. De sfeer van het al even zweverige ‘Hydromel’ leunt dicht aan bij Ieps SOUND THEATRE 4. ‘Brasero’ maakt dan weer de cirkel rond: latin-jazz die zeker niet zou misstaan op een loungeverzamelaar.

Hoewel de ‘folkinvloeden’ over het ganse album zeer duidelijk hoorbaar zijn, wordt er toch weinig gebruik gemaakt van traditionele nummers. De meeste composities zijn van de hand van Durand zelf. Een enkele maal herkennen we toch een folky dansritme (zoals in ‘L’Arrogante’). Maar folky of niet, de hele plaat nodigt uit tot dansen!

Cosmic Drone

Afficionados starts as reggae with a turn quadrant. In itself already

strange. But progresses gradually so that we are astonished more

and more. It degenerates, as it happens, in a psychedelic rocksong with

wild electric guitars. At least, that's what we would think. But there are no guitars in COSMIC DRONE! What we hear is an electro-acoustic hurdy-gurdy ( built by D. Siorat )! Those are played on by the Orleans worldfamous Stephane Durand. He is accompanied on this plate by a very funky bass player, a drummer and keyboards.

Our own Filiep 'Iep' Fourier did also already vast experimentings with

a hurdy gurdy, but what we here to hear get are nevertheless

completely new for me. And not only for me. If you just as the opinion

of the reads through specialised folkpress in Europe there on, then

you retrieve everywhere stupefaction and especially also enthusiasm.

The group also stood executed year on renowned SAINT-CHARTIER the

festival and got there also favourable criticisms.

With all kinds of electronic impact, as it happens, the most crazy

sounds from Stephanes turn quadrant can be worked magic. We had it

already concerning the guitarsound, but also a sound close to a church organ belongs to the possibilities. Or did you have rather the ` scratches of a hip-hop-dj ? You ask it, he’ll do it.

Once beyond the stupefaction concerning this miraculous instrument we

can start listen really to music. A lot of elements from several music

styles are used. Fat funky bass, palmas (hand slapping which we know

especially at flamenco), a hammond organ,  technogrooves, jazzy votes, reggae,psychedelic soundeffects... Especially in the beginning of the album this results mainly in powerful folkrock. Already are folkrock a much too restricted term this captivating describe music.

But there is also place for quiet music which has much gone of what

e.g. our BALL OF THE BOITEUX do. Titeltrack ` Cosmic Drone is such

a pearl.The group is clear supporter of fat funk. But also of seventies

headstock: lesson Frégates do think me of SUPERTRAMP.

“La belle Etoile” is a buitenbeentje. For one time no groovy

rythm section but very quietly new-age-achtig a number. Here (and

only here) I find that music improves will have sounded with an

ordinary hurdy gurdy. The sound happens at “synthetic”. In the

connecting St Denis en Valse is notable this fortunately already much

less. The environment of the already just as woolly ` Hydromel ' leans

at elm SOUND THEATRE 4. ` Brasero ' closes then the circle around:

latin-jazz that certain would not not become on loungeverzamelaar.

Although the ` folkinfluences are concerning the entire album very

clear audible, little is nevertheless used traditional numbers. Most

of the composities are of the hand of Durand themselves. Some a time

nevertheless recognises we folky dancing rhythm (like in ”

L'Arrogante”). But folky or not, the complete plate invite to dancing!
